Questions
Is PIC certified, or approved for navigation?
No. PIC is an aid to situational awareness and planning. It is not a certified navigation source and is not approved as a primary means of navigation. Its attitude comes from GPS, or from a portable receiver's AHRS, and neither is a certified attitude source.
It doesn't replace an official weather briefing, NOTAMs, current charts and publications, your aircraft's instruments or ATC. You remain the pilot in command.
Does PIC work without an internet connection?
Yes. Charts, plates, the navigation database and terrain are downloaded by region and work offline. In flight, weather and traffic come from an ADS-B receiver if you have one. Internet weather, lightning, ATIS and satellite views need a connection.
How current is the data?
The navigation data follows the FAA's 28-day cycle, and charts follow the FAA's edition dates. PIC downloads the next cycle ahead of time so you're ready on the effective date.
Which ADS-B receivers work with PIC?
Receivers that send the standard GDL 90 format over Wi-Fi, including Stratux, iLevil, SkyEcho, Sentry and Stratus in open mode. Connect your device to the receiver's Wi-Fi and PIC picks up traffic, FIS-B weather, GPS and, when the receiver has one, its AHRS. An iLevil BOM also gives the PFD indicated airspeed. If a Stratux isn't heard, Settings and the Receiver screen say what to check.
How does auto altitude choose an altitude?
It looks at the minimum safe altitude along your route, the airway MEAs for the equipment you filed, the direction of flight, your aircraft's performance, the winds aloft, restricted and prohibited areas, and any TFRs. It picks the altitude with the fewest problems and the least fuel, and shows you why.
How does auto alternate decide whether I need one?
It follows the FAA's alternate rules: the approaches at your destination you can fly with your filed equipment, and the forecast around your ETA. For alternates, only the forecast decides; the METAR is shown but never qualifies or rules out an airport. Every airport it turns down comes with the reason.
What does "(+12nm)" next to a departure or arrival mean?
It's how much further you'd fly on that procedure than on the shortest one that joins your route. The list is sorted shortest first.
My aircraft isn't in the list of profiles.
Pick the closest type and edit the figures; every number in a profile can be changed. Or email us the type and we'll look at adding it.
How do I share an aircraft with a partner or club?
In Settings, Aircraft, choose the aircraft, then Share, and enter their email address. You choose whether they can use it or edit it, and you can revoke it at any time. They need a 480data account with that address.
Is there an iPad version?
No. PIC is for Android tablets and phones.
What are the PFD, MFD and PROC buttons?
They're PIC's three flight displays. The PFD is the attitude display and HSI, the MFD is the moving map, and PROC shows the plate of the procedure you've loaded. Tap one to turn it on beside the others, or tap it again to turn it off; the last one on stays on. PROC is available once your plan has a departure, arrival or approach loaded.
Can PIC drive my autopilot?
PIC can send the flight plan and your position through a Bluetooth LE serial (RS-232) adapter as NMEA 0183, Garmin Aviation or GNS 480 MapCom, in Settings, Serial output. For autopilots that ignore roll steering, such as a PortaPilot, choose PortaPilot mode: holds, procedure turns, DME arcs and large turns go out as extra waypoints. That mode hasn't been tested with a PortaPilot yet, so try it in VMC first.
What does PIC cost?
The price isn't set yet. The beta is free, and we'll publish pricing before the beta ends.
What happens to my data?
See the privacy notice. In short: your account, aircraft and plans are stored so they can sync across your devices, and we don't sell your data.
Reporting a problem
Email support@480data.com with your device, the PIC version (Settings, About), what you expected and what happened. A screenshot helps. If the problem could affect safety, put "safety" in the subject and stop relying on the feature until you hear from us.
Safety
PIC is an aid to situational awareness and planning, not a certified navigation source. It doesn't replace an official briefing or the pilot's judgement.
